Aziz Rahman was a speaker at international webinar on professional secrecy and legal professional privilege

Aziz Rahman was invited to speak at the “Worldwide: A Comparative Approach to Professional Secrecy and Attorney-Client Privilege in Criminal Proceedings’’ international webinar which is being organised by Mondaq and hosted by Monfrini Bitton Klein. 

He was one of five speakers at the hour-long event, which was held on Tuesday, November 15 at 2pm UTC. It examined the right to confidentiality of communications between clients and their lawyers. 

Aziz and his fellow speakers assessed the challenges to this confidentiality that can arise in criminal investigations; especially in cross-border investigations, where different approaches may lead to conflicting results. Aziz addressed some of the most pressing questions in this area and give a UK perspective. Other speakers did the same for investigations conducted in France, Switzerland and the United States. 

The topics discussed at the webinar included: 

• The differences between the civil law approach of professional secrecy and the common law approach of attorney-client privilege. 
• Issues facing foreign lawyers.  
• Challenges for in-house counsel. 
• Internal investigations. 
• The lawyer as a suspect.  
• The examination of lawyers  
• Sorting of seized material
