REGISTRATION CLOSED Syed Rahman and Angelika Hellweger were speakers at the fifth annual FIRE Middle East event. The conference, was held at Dubai’s Shangri-La Hotel from November 9 to 11, will saw asset recovery professionals from around the world analysing issues relating to fraud, insolvency, recovery and enforcement. Syed was one one of the speakers on the panel, “Navigating The Complexities on Sanctioned Sovereigns’’. Angelika was on on the panel, “Getting To the End Success – Using Insurance and Third Party Funding’’. Syed talked about the need to address sovereign immunity in cross-border enforcement and strategies for enforcement against a sovereign debtor. He also explained the impact of enforcement and recovery against sanctioned sovereigns and the Dubai International Financial Centre’s (DIFC’s) approach to sovereign immunity. Angelika’s panel assessed issues including governing frameworks for the use of funding in the Middle East, the ethical considerations that parties need to be aware of, attracting investors and the potential returns, and risk mitigation strategies.
