Angelika Hellweger assesses the UK and European Union’s use of their sanctions powers

The scope and effectiveness of sanctions powers in the UK and European Union (EU) was explained in an article by Angelika Hellweger.

In her piece, which was published by Law360, Angelika analyses the approaches taken to sanctions enforcement and the most notable recent developments. 

She details the greater powers given to the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and its limited enforcement track record. Angelika also explains that, like the UK, the EU’s increase in enforcement activity has brought only modest results, due to the problems of implementing measures across all member states.

Angelika highlights signs of progress but emphasises that the EU and UK have “no shortage of sanctions on their books but a seeming inability and / or reluctance to enforce them effectively and consistently across borders.’’

She also outlines how corporates can reduce their risk of facing a sanctions investigation - and how to respond to one.
