With the UK government announcing it will introduce sanctions targeting people smugglers, The National asked Angelika Hellweger for her assessment of the proposals.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that those taking migrants across the English Channel will be hit with the “full arsenal” of sanctions. This would make the UK government the first to bring in a sanctions regime targeting people smuggling.
But Angelika said the proposals “look good, but whether they’re feasible remains to be seen”. She warned that attempting to find the smugglers is “like looking for a needle in a haystack.”
Angelika added: “These smugglers are using unofficial banking systems such as Hawala. Obviously, the people at the top of the businesses will have a lot of money but individuals lower down probably not, so you have to go after the big fish.
“It’s difficult to find these people smugglers and to go after them in other countries.’’
