Angelika Hellweger explained to The Sunday Times how sanctions on Russia have affected the movement of timber.
She said that sanctions imposed following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine have led to a lack of transparency regarding the movement of Russian wood.
This has led to such “conflict timber’’ finding its way into Europe via third countries, including China and Turkey, despite the sanctions.
Angelika emphasised the difficulty in identifying specific examples of this happening because there is a lack of clarity in the supply chain. This has, she added, meant there are “a lot of false country-of-origin labels circulating.”
