With US President Donald Trump deciding to pause enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Aziz Rahman outlined why this could be an opportunity for the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
In an article published by FT Adviser, Aziz argues that there is now “the equivalent of a legal vacuum’’ and a chance for the SFO to “to step into the shoes of the world’s biggest bribery and corruption policeman, now they appear to have been discarded by the US.’’
The piece outlines the SFO’s willingness to take on big cases but warns that taking on the role the US had held would stretch the agency’s resources and expertise. Aziz refers to the agency’s difficulties in recent years and the possibility of UK-US political tension arising from an SFO that takes on a bigger world role.
