/ News / Aziz Rahman questions whether the SFO’s Unaoil mistakes will lead to structural change at the agency

With failings at the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) highlighted in a report into its mishandling of a bribery investigation, Reuters asked for Aziz Rahman’s thoughts.
Former High Court judge David Calvert-Smith was appointed by the Attorney General to assess the SFO’s workings after its Unaoil bribery case started to collapse last year. Three defendants have now had their convictions quashed.
His report highlighted a number of failings by the SFO. SFO Director Lisa Osofsky said the review - along with another one into the SFO’s handling of its fraud investigation into service provider Serco – made a “sobering read’’.
Aziz said that the conclusions of the report were damaging for the SFO. But he said that it remained to be seen whether they would lead to structural change at the agency.
