A panel of experts from around the world took part in Rahman Ravelli’s online seminar, “Challenges Facing the SFO Here and Abroad’’.
The event, which considered the factors facing the Serious Fraud Office and its equivalent agencies in other countries, was held on May 6. It drew a multinational audience of general counsel, legal professionals, compliance experts, company CEOs and board members and representatives of business organisations.
Among the main issues being discussed was the KBR judgement, and what it means for obtaining evidence that is outside of the SFO’s jurisdiction. The nature of cross-border cooperation between European agencies now that Brexit has been completed was analysed. Lessons that can be learnt from the UK deferred prosecution agreements concluded so far and other countries’ experiences of such agreements were also assessed.
Approaches adopted in some of the most recent, significant UK and European investigations came under the spotlight. The implications of possible future legal developments and some that have already been introduced were also considered by the webinar’s panel.
The panel was made up of Niall Hearty, legal director at Rahman Ravelli; Annabel Kerley, partner at global compliance advisors StoneTurn; Rebecca Dix, associate general counsel at the SFO; and Emmanuel Moyne, co-founder of Bougartchev Moyne Associe’s (Paris). Rahman Ravelli’s founder and senior partner, Aziz Rahman, was moderator for the event.
