Financier Worldwide asked Rahman Ravelli’s Syed Rahman to write an article analysing the business crime risks facing those working in the energy and natural resources sector.
In his piece, Syed emphasised the global, fast-moving and dynamic nature of the markets and how political and financial factors can produce challenges; particularly the risk of bribery and corruption. He also explained that allegations of wrongdoing can prompt multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional investigations.
The increased legal scrutiny focused on the sector was detailed in the article, which listed some of the major cases that have arisen out of allegations.
Syed also outlined the offences contained in the UK Bribery Act, the consequences of failing to comply with it and its relevance to the energy and natural resources sector. The article covered the steps that companies in this sector can take to avoid legal pitfalls.
It also gave advice on how to conduct an internal investigation if wrongdoing is suspected and on how to self-report wrongdoing in order to secure the best possible outcome.
Syed's article can be read here.
