With the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) involved in a number of major trials this year, Law360 asked Rahman Ravelli for their assessment of the task facing the agency.
The trials include bribery prosecutions of former senior executives at energy company Petrofac, fraud cases against former bosses at collapsed café chain Patisserie Valerie, and the prosecution of those behind an investment scheme and a buy-to-let car operation. The SFO will also be defending its largest-ever asset seizure in a case testing the agency's power to confiscate tainted money.
Rahman Ravelli said those cases amount to a "five-stage litmus test for the SFO."
They added: "Win most of them and the agency will be viewed as being on the right track. Lose the majority of them and old criticisms of SFO prosecution failings will resurface."
