With the UK government considering taking the right to jury trial away from those charged with fraud, Rahman Ravelli considers the implications.
In an article, which was published by Security Matters, they explain the reasons why the idea of having fraud cases heard by a specialist judge rather than a jury has been put forward. Rahman Ravelli also outline the review of the court system that has led to the idea being proposed.
They summarise why supporters of the idea believe it would bring “swifter and arguably more consistent, logical justice’’. But they also detail the argument that defendants would be losing a right that has been enshrined in law for many generations and that fraud cases only account for just over 1.5% of the cases that make up the current crown court backlog.
