Niall Hearty explains why the SFO should not be criticised for Glencore investigation delays

With the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) saying it needs more time to decide whether to charge suspects in its Glencore corruption investigation, Niall Hearty assessed the agency’s position. 

In a piece, which was published by The World Financial Review, Niall says that the delay may be seen by some as further evidence that the SFO is often “dragging its feet’’ when it comes to making big decisions. 

But he says that this is unfair as any new matters that come to light require additional investigation, and any investigating agency has to act accordingly. He adds that the SFO would face harsh criticism if an investigation was to collapse later on because it had rushed matters or cut corners. 

He concludes that putting strict time limits on an investigation would be unfair and unrealistic given the number of factors involved.
