With the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) having obtained its first unexplained wealth order (UWO), The Times asked Rahman Ravelli for their assessment of it.
In this article, Rahman Ravelli outlines why the SFO’s use of UWOs could be a positive development. They argue that UWOs are yet to prove themselves as being an effective weapon in the battle against financial crime.
Rahman Ravelli emphasise that the use of UWOs is well below government predictions made when they were introduced six years ago. They add that they have been subject to criticism and, until now, only the National Crime Agency had used them.
They explain why the SFO may make greater use of them from now on and the types of cases that they are intended to be used in.
