Syed Rahman and Ruxandra Murariu-Boatca consider the arguments for updating the UK’s sanctions regime

With the UK sanctions regime being criticised for being outdated, Syed Rahman and Ruxandra Murariu-Boatca examined the claims.

In an article that was published by Dow Jones Risk Journal, they assess the arguments for change put forward by former justice secretary Robert Buckland in a report produced by the Adam Smith Institute (ASI).

They detail the measures proposed in the report, which are aimed at ensuring a more flexible, less reactive approach that more accurately reflects the spectrum of modern-day threats.

Their article concludes that the report is “a constructive and timely contribution to the conversation around UK’s sanctions policy’’. But it emphasises that a more comprehensive analysis of the legal, institutional and diplomatic challenges would be required before any or all of the report’s recommendations could be effectively implemented.
