/ News / The Times seeks Aziz Rahman’s opinion on Lisa Osofsky’s departure as SFO Director
Author: Azizur Rahman 22 November 2022
With Serious Fraud Office Director Lisa Osofsky announcing she will leave her position, The Times asked Aziz Rahman for his thoughts on her legacy.
Aziz made it clear that some SFO investigations under her control had been marred by bad judgment and “some major failures at crucial times”.
He argued that the SFO’s biggest failure under Osofsky was the prosecution of executives at Monaco-based Unaoil, where the agency’s disclosure failings led to three convictions being quashed and the Attorney General commissioning a report into what went wrong.
Aziz explained that the report, conducted by former Director of Public Prosecutions and ex-judge Sir David Calvert-Smith QC, found a litany of SFO failings. He added that the report “fell just short of saying the director had made an inappropriate decision to have contact with a third party acting as a fixer”.
