The UK’s Legal Approach to Modern Slavery is Detailed by Angelika Hellweger

With calls for the UK government to change enforcement of the law on modern slavery, Angelika Hellweger assessed the current situation.

In a piece published by LexisNexis, Angelika explains that the Modern Slavery Act was world-leading legislation when passed in 2015. But the UK now looking to introduce larger penalties for non-compliance with the Act shows, she argues, that the world has changed since then.

Her article outlines Home Office recommendations regarding enforcement of the Act and some of the factors that have limited its effectiveness. Angelika says that there is an acknowledgment that changes need to be made. But she adds that there is no timescale in place for such changes, and compares the UK situation with other countries that have introduced similar legislation.

But she also gives reasons why it would be wrong for companies “to assume they are being given a free pass to use unethical business practices’’.
