Rahman Ravelli have used two cases involving corporate bribery settlements as the basis for an article explaining the benefits of internal investigations.
In this piece, published by Thomson Reuters’ Regulatory Intelligence, they said the cases illustrated how the findings from internal investigations can help obtain lenient treatment.
In both of the cases, France's National Financial Prosecutor (PNF) had said in settlement documents that the "relevance of internal investigations" had been a factor in determining the size of the fines.
Rahman Ravelli have emphasised that any company facing allegations or scrutiny can benefit from a well-planned, carefully conducted internal evaluation. Such an approach can, they add, identify problems, minimise the potential damage from legal or regulatory proceedings and help a firm remain operational.
They stressed that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to internal investigations and outlined how they should be planned.
