Zulfi Meerza assesses the first Bribery Conviction of a Foreign Official in Britain

Author: Zulfi Meerza  17 May 2024

With the first bribery conviction of a foreign official in Britain having been achieved, Zulfi Meerza explained to Law360 why the case was particularly notable.

Romy Andrianarisoa, a former leading aide to the president of Madagascar, and her French associate were jailed after a trial in London that featured covert recordings of the pair soliciting bribes from an undercover officer.

Zulfi Meerza said the case was "uniquely placed" because it relied on "smoking gun" evidence to win the convictions.

He added: "It is not surprising that we have not seen more cases like this. Cases connected to fraud and bribery are usually based on historical conduct that is normally brought to the attention of enforcement agencies after the event has occurred.’’

Zulfi also outlined the practical difficulties of gathering live information on white-collar crimes and of relying on covert evidence at trial.
